Using several family or clan patterns as a starting point, we will explore how to read the drafts associated with these designs and their color arrangements. We will show you how to interpret the color code for each clan’s tartan. This is very important because it distinguishes one clan from another. Then we'll show you how to take a commonly know tartan, such as a Campbell tartan, and reassign different colors to give it a different feel and a pleasing design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTartans are woven as a simple four shaft twill. The check and plaid patterns are designed around an even number of ends per color making color changes easy to do. This class will help you become more comfortable with tackling challenges like determining the proper sett for an unknown thread, how to calculate a warp for a limited amount of thread so you don’t run short, or just calculating how much material you will need for a project. In addition, this class will teach you to read a threading draft and explain all the different parts of a draft, the threading, the tie-up and treadling. We will show you how to determine the treadling by analyzing the threading and then show you how to decipher the tie-up for four harnesses and multi-harness. We’ll also tell you about old weavers’ customs for treadling Star Fashion, Rose Fashion and on opposites.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach student will then be shown how to do a drawdown on graph paper so they can see how their pattern will look when woven. We will cover sewing pattern conventions, layouts for cutting and how to choose a good commercial sewing pattern that works well\u003cbr\u003ewith handwoven yardage. We will introduce you to finishing on a serger and ways to stabilize handwovens before cutting into them. On day two we will practice these\u003cbr\u003etechniques on your own handwoven fabrics to create either a tote bag or Japanese Rice Bag so you can practice your new skills. In this workshop, students will bring in their ‘precious’ fabrics, clothing, trims and embellishments and will develop a plan for creating a beautiful new garment. Using commercial sewing patterns as a template, students will learn creative ways to use pattern pieces as a canvas for showcasing their beloved fabrics.
