Pile Weaves with Supplemental Warps with Deb Essen
Video Download | 100 minutes

Learn how to weave velvet and terry cloth without a second warp beam! Unlike supplemental weft fabrics, where floats of weft are cut to create a pile surface, velvet and terry cloth are supplemental warp weaves where warp loops are drawn to either the top surface (velvet) or both the top and bottom (terry cloth). The loops can be cut or left uncut to create wonderful designs in cloth you will just love to pet. Another bonus: you only need one shuttle!

In this video, you'll learn:

  • How to design pile weave textiles using supplemental warps
  • The special warping needs of pile weaves with supplemental warps
  • An easy way to thread supplemental warps
  • How to set up your loom without needing a second warp beam
  • Tips, tricks, and techniques for weaving supplemental warp pile weaves

Commercial weaving studios have made these fancy pile weaves for centuries using special looms and equipment. Now you can "get fuzzy" and have the fun of weaving these luxurious fabrics at your own loom.

ABOUT THE HOST:

At 9 years old, Deb Essen watched a weaver perform "magic" on a loom for the first time. Enticed by that memory, she finally took her first weaving class in 1993, and she’s been exploring weaving ever since. In 2004, Deb achieved the Certificate of Excellence in Handweaving, Level 1 from the Handweavers Guild of America. In 2011, she was inducted into the Montana Circle of American Masters in Folk and Traditional Art. In addition to running her business in handwoven, creating and designing kits for handweavers, Deb teaches at conferences and guilds, nationally and internationally. Her exploration of supplemental warp weaves led her to write Weaving with Supplemental Warps: Techniques and Projects, available from Interweave.
