Join Sara as we celebrate the Shetland Sheep and the wool that inspires designers to produce some of the most beautiful handmade wooly creations. In this course Sara will explore how over centuries the landscape and people of Scotland have shaped the breed and its’ fleece characteristics to the standards we value today. We will examine how this versatile yarn is used among needle artists and weavers alike. Students will be introduced to some of its’ unique characteristics that will influence the planning, warping and weaving process compared to other yarns marketed to weavers.
Using the 2-ply jumper weight yarns from Jamieson & Smith, the official UK wool brokers, we will go through the design process to create a one of a kind shawl to highlight this gorgeous collection. Once a structure is chosen, we will look at color relationships and how they will support your design choices. With a full range of 100 colors in small 25 gram put-ups student will not feel the same financial limitations typically experienced with other yarn lines in larger put-ups.
Once a design is committed to, students will warp their looms. With tips given to help the warping process, Sara will highlight some considerations unique to the Shetland wool.
Students are responsible for purchasing all materials as each project will be unique to their design and make require different quantities. All 100 colors will be available for purchase in our store during the workshop.
