About class

Date: May 13-17, 2025

Time: 9am- 4pm

This class is based on the tradition of weaving Scottish Tartans. Using several family or clan patterns as a starting point, we will explore how to read the drafts associated with these designs and their color arrangements. We will show you how to interpret the color code for each clan’s tartan. This is very important because it distinguishes one clan from another. Then we'll show you how to take a commonly know tartan, such as a Campbell tartan, and reassign different colors to give it a different feel and a pleasing design.

Tartans are woven as a simple four shaft twill. The check and plaid patterns are designed around an even number of ends per color making color changes easy to do. We'll show you how to work a tartans color order into a towel warp width so that it is balanced and symmetrical and how to weave and carry the colors up the selvedge edge to make a neat and tidy selvedge.

This class will work in a round robin format so that each weaver will have an opportunity to weave several traditional tartan design towels and also several towels with color variations that are more suited to kitchen colors.

All materials are included with tuition.
