About class

Date: May 7 and 8, 2027

Time: 10am- 4pm

Are you afraid of your sewing machine? Got yards of
handwovens but don't know what to do next? Are you a Saori weaver who wants to learn to cut sew? This workshop is for you!

On day one, we will learn how to sew basic seams, do some sewing machine adjustments and use a variety of seam finishes (flat-felled, French seam, Hong Kong finishes and more) using “practice” commercial fabrics. We will cover sewing pattern conventions, layouts for cutting and how to choose a good commercial sewing pattern that works well
with handwoven yardage. We will introduce you to finishing on a serger and ways to stabilize handwovens before cutting into them. On day two we will practice these
techniques on your own handwoven fabrics to create either a tote bag or Japanese Rice Bag so you can practice your new skills. Pattern for bag will be provided by instructor.

Students should bring a sewing machine in good working order for use in the classroom and also bring their handwoven fabrics plus about 2 yards of commercial woven fabric.
